Shirley Jackson's The Lottery and Its Nostalgic Connection to the Primitive Man/analysis 

In Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” there is a constant struggle for the characters to make the ritual murder of a member of their town a familiar act, one which they can disconnect themselves and their feelings from while justifying murder for the common good of the village. This process of distancing themselves not only tries to make the lottery a normal and familiar act, it also is turned in to a tool that forces a better work ethic and is a mirroring of the rituals of the primitive man. The lottery acts only as a scare tactic and is used by the high class members of the town to fool the working middleclass in to believing that efforts in their job as well as their economic accomplishments will lead to their safety in the lottery selection. The lottery essentially becomes a nostalgic act for the townspeople, not only because they partake in it annually, but also because they are drawing on a collective nostalgic act of the primitive ritualistic murder and the tendencies of the human race to be savage.

    Writer Shirley Jackson, best known for her dark works of literature, weaves a careful web of symbolism through the title of her shorts story “The Lottery.” The background of the story describes a small rural town set in the twentieth century gathering together for the yearly “lottery”. The words, “the lottery,” immediately bring to mind the conventional idea of a lucky jackpot-winner, but writer Shirley Jackson had a different image in mind when using these words to title her haunting short story (Griffin, 44). By manipulating this deceptive image, Jackson creates an abrupt and shocking ending, and sheds light on humanity’s tendency to cling to meaningless rituals.

Analysis of "The Lottery", a Short Story by Shirley Jackson

 Shirley Jackson's short story, "The Lottery", aroused much controversy and criticism in 1948, following its debut publication, in the New Yorker. Jackson uses irony and comedy to suggest an underlying evil, hypocrisy, and weakness of human kind.

The story takes place in a small village, where the people are close and tradition is paramount. A yearly event, called the lottery, is one in which one person in the town is randomly chosen, by a drawing, to be violently stoned by friends and family. The drawing has been around over seventy-seven years and is practiced by every member of the town.
